are starting onsite. Watch this space to see the boat build live

Webcam Testing

I've been busy building our custom webcam setup for the Floating
Cinema, and wanted to check out how well it worked uploading images
on the move, so decided to take it out for a test run in my car.
Cue lots of strange looks from people wondering what I was
doing.

For those interested in the technical details - the webcam set
up is a Logitech USB webcam connected to a Raspberry Pi, with a USB
3G Modem for internet connectivity. The whole thing is stitched
togehter using Ruby/Gstreamer and some networking juju using
OpenVPN, to provide remote access.

The final item will also have GPS attached to it, but for the
coming weeks it's going to be mounted statically watching the ship
build, so no need for all that.

The whole thing is working pretty well, though my car USB power
supply was a bit flakey so I didn't get that many good shots on the
way (and the roads around the Lee Valley are a lot less interesting
than the canal!)

Not drowning but waving!

Turks ship yard but other yards are available...

After months of pursuing the possibilities of using the rusty
but rather lovely old industrial hopper as the base for the
Floating Cinema, and extensive interrogation, head scratching,
number crunching (and the odd touch of procrastination) by
structural engineers, marine surveyors, architects and
boat-builders we’ve come to the conclusion that it just ain’t going
to float.....

So, it’s been back to the drawing board for the architects,
onwards with the quest for a new solution, and extensive research
into boatyards to test the feasibility of building a brand new
Floating Cinema from scratch. It’s been a nail-biting time, but
we’re back on track with a slightly revised design, and a new
plan!
